Mixed Martial Arts

What Is Exactly?

Mixed Martial Arts / Vale Tudo is a full contact fighting sport that involves a combination of many martial art techniques. The rules allow you to use both ground and standing techniques while fighting. A heavily regulated sport it has exploded with popularity thanks in large part to the UFC. MMA was started from a Brazilian competition known as Vale Tudo, and was brought over by the Gracie family with the advent of UFC.

Originally, it was a no-rules fighting competition with the intent of finding the best unarmed martial arts technique in the world. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu dominated the MMA scene in early years. Today the advent of rules and regulations to make it safer for fighters has helped it explode into the mainstream. Now fighters must know a mixture of martial arts, the most effective being: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, and Wrestling. What these competitions also did was expose the reality that there are only a few martial arts that have real world / real fighting applicability.

NFL athletes have now turned to mixed martial arts camps and training systems as a means of staying in peak performance during pre-season and off-season.
